Stormwater drains pose a new risk to health.

Stormwater drains pose a new risk to health

A large part of the urban population is at risk when contaminants mix with stormwater. This polluted water directly flows into lakes and rivers, further degrading the water quality in freshwater bodies. Polluted waters are a source of disease for aquatic ecosystems and human life.
The current state of affairs in India

70%

Cities have inadequate drainage systems that cause frequent flooding in the rainy season.

50%

Population in urban areas lives in low-lying areas and informal settlements. Here, the impact of flooding during heavy rainfall is experienced the most.

60%

of sewage generated by urban cities flows into stormwater drains and nearby freshwater bodies.

Why is this so concerning?

Why is this so concerning?

Every city, regardless of size, has an interconnected network of stormwater drains. These systems are designed to divert excess surface water and prevent flooding during heavy rain. In India, there is inadequate infrastructure to divert sewage and stormwater separately, often causing one to enter the other. Sewage that enters these drains degrades the quality of water within the drains and the freshwater sources they flow into.

Limits of infrastructure

Surface water often gets mixed up with sewage in stormwater drains in urban areas. This results in water contamination and degradation of water quality.

Stormwater drains feed freshwater bodies

Water from stormwater drains feeds into surrounding freshwater lakes and rivers. The contaminated water in these drains flows straight into lakes and rivers, furthering the pollution problem.

Destroying aquatic ecosystems

Poor water quality does not nurture life. Nutrient overload from sewage causes eutrophication, resulting in algal blooms and the depletion of oxygen. This environment does not enable aquatic life to thrive.

A health hazard to humans

When contaminated water enters our drinking and potable water, health risks arise. A large population in urban areas is at risk of contracting waterborne diseases that are life threatening if not treated with adequate care.

Adaptability and scalability

Floating gardens can be adapted and scaled to different environments, making them versatile for various water bodies

Habitat creation

These gardens provide habitats for aquatic organisms, promoting biodiversity and aiding in pollutant breakdown

How do Floating Gardens improve stormwater drains?

01

Filter out pollutants

Plants in Floating Gardens filter heavy metals, toxins, and contaminants from the water through their roots. As a result, the water quality in stormwater drains is improved, and it flows cleaner downstream into freshwater bodies.
02

Enable free flow of water

The buoyant surfaces of Floating Gardens have the ability to trap sediment and debris that flows into the stormwater drain, preventing blockage downstream.
03

Flexible design

Floating Gardens can be altered to fit the dimensions of the drain they are designed for. Their flexible design and aesthetic quality make them ideal for landscaping urban areas.
We’re on a mission to accelerate the restoration of India’s water bodies, and we’ve been doing this for over 8 years.
