Mylasandra Lake is a 15 acre water body situated in the Anekal district of Bangalore Urban. Anekal is 36 km from the city centre, but an emerging industrial hub with many major industries setting up factories and offices in the vicinity. Among the many lakes in Bengaluru, Mylasandra Lake is less polluted but still needs restorative action.

The Problem
Rapid urbanisation is a major problem for lakes and other water bodies in cities. In Bengaluru’s Mylasandra Lake, the main cause of pollution was sewage and festive waste. The lake is divided into two by design. One section of the lake is dedicated to natural sewage treatment, while the other is dedicated to rainwater collection. With the rise in sewage waste in the lake, the threat was to freshwater, which would get contaminated with overflowing sewage water.
Our natural solution
With the Mylasandra Lake Rejuvenation Project, authorities realised that treating the polluted water was the best way to counteract the contamination. They approached us to install 1,500 sq. ft. of Floating Gardens in sedimentation ponds. With sedimentation ponds, the sewage water had a cordoned area where it could flow. Here the Floating Gardens could clean the water naturally through the process of phytoremediation.
The making of a clean ecosystem for Mylasandra Lake
By installing Floating Gardens strategically in areas where sewage water flowed into the lake, we helped prevent the influx of untreated sewage water into a freshwater lake. The main area of the lake remains fresh and clean, while the sewage water is treated through phytoremediation. In this way, we have created a sustainable and healthy ecosystem that is easily maintained.
