Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary Water Quality Improvement Project
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, a popular bird sanctuary in the Mandya District near Mysore, is a haven for birds and bird enthusiasts alike. Spanning six islets, the sanctuary is home to a diverse range of bird species and wildlife. The lush greenery, vibrant bird population, and serene atmosphere have been designated a protected Ramsar site in February 2022.
Area :
1800 sq. ft.
Location :
Mandya District, Karnataka
The Problem
Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is surrounded by fields used extensively for agriculture. The run-off water from the paddy fields accumulates in the sanctuary’s ponds, causing an explosion of algal growth. Excessive algal growth in the ponds can limit the oxygen supply for other organisms within the pond, thereby hurting the ecosystem.
Our natural solution
To solve this problem, Floating Gardens were deployed in ponds within the sanctuary. Around 1800 sq. ft. of Floating Gardens were installed along the periphery of the ponds, acting as a barrier that filtered the nutrients and contaminants from the excess paddy field run-offs. Additionally, aeration systems were installed to improve oxygen circulation within the pond as well. As a result, algal growth reduced, and the area was aesthetically enhanced as well.
Bringing back tourist appeal at Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary
Ranganthittu has long been a tourist attraction near Mysore. The sanctuary is also a haven for birds and other wildlife. Floating Gardens have helped protect that sanctuary and retain its appeal. These installations have successfully purified the water within the ponds and improved the aquatic ecosystem within them. Along with aeration systems, the Floating Gardens have oxygenated the water and reduced algal growth. This ensures that the aesthetic appeal of the water bodies in Ranganathittu has been restored.
